Deal Marks Major Server Swing
April 06, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet research firm Netcraft's (netcraft.com) monthly Web Server Survey for the month of April reported this week that some of the biggest events in the report's history took place this month, with responses to the survey topping the 80 million mark for the first time, and one of the largest one-month market share swings in the history of the Web server market.
In March, Microsoft inked a deal with Go Daddy that brought the entire domain system - more than 3.5 million hostnames - from a Linux platform to the Windows platform. In Netcraft's monthly data, Microsoft gained 4.7 percent share of the Web server market, while Apache lost 5.9 percent.
Go Daddy had been the world's largest Linux host, according to Netcraft's data. Now it is the largest Windows Server 2003 host. The company says it plans to transfer 4.4 million hostnames in total.
Platform shifts at registrars have significant impact on Web server market share because of the large number of parked domains they manage. Microsoft last saw significant surges in 2001 and 2002, following migrations at Register.com and VeriSign.
