March 29, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Search engine giant Yahoo (yahoo.com) announced on Tuesday it was giving users of its Web-based email service unlimited storage capacity in celebration of Yahoo Mail's 10th birthday. In a phased roll-out starting in May, Yahoo will remove the 1GB cap on memory for free email accounts and the 2GB cap of memory for paid premium accounts.

The Sunnyvale, California Yahoo acquired Web-based email service Rocketmail and offered 4MB of storage when it was relaunched as Yahoo Mail in October 1997. Yahoo Mail is the most popular Web-based email service and had more than 250 million users as of January, according to industry-tracking comScore Media Metrix.

The elimination of the storage cap comes at a time when costs of computer storage are decreasing with the emerging trend for people to exchange video, music and other data-heavy digital files online.

Yahoo said its "email server farms" around the world were equipped to handle the storage load and the company will invest in improved capacity where needed. However, it warns that the limitless storage is not meant to be used by people to back-up computer software by copying system contents onto Yahoo servers.
