March 13, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Search engine giant Google announced on Thursday it has run a soft launch of Google Ad Manager(google.com/admanager/login/en_US/index.html), a tool that enables publishers to manage ad placement on their websites.

Google Ad Manager enables users to include their ad codes to the application, then place the Ad Manager generated code on their sites. The software is able to track page views and CTR, record statistics, and geotarget or other break downs on each unit. The software also supports locally sold ads, as well as direct sale advertising.

Another distinguishing feature of the software is its ability to offer Adsense units for fallback and remnant site inventory. Google Ad Manager also supports graphical display, video and text ads.

The service will go head to head with OpenX (openx.org/), which was previously called Openads, and before that, phpadsnew. The popular adserver solution boasts 30,000 publishers using the software on 100,000 sites in 140 different countries and in 20 languages.

OpenX is set to launch a hosted solution later this year. But despite its $5 million backing, OpenX will find it difficult to compete with Ad Manager when it officially launches, based on Google's consistent track record.

Last week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the company is determined to gain market share against Google in the field of online advertising and Web searching.
