Web Host Steadfast Purchases Carbon Offset Credits

By Justin Lee, March 09, 2010

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider Steadfast Networks (http://steadfast.net) announced on Tuesday it has purchased enough carbon offset credits to offer a 100 percent carbon offset for its staff commuting, office usage, core infrastructure, networking equipment, shared web hosting, VPS hosting, and backup services.

Steadfast Networks is certified carbon neutral by Carbonfund (www.carbonfund.org), an organization that helps businesses reduce and offset their climate impact through the purchase of carbon offset credits.

"Moving steadily forward in the 21st century does not mean trampling all over our natural resources, so we have teamed up with Carbonfund.org and implemented a variety of green initiative programs to help preserve our natural resources," says Karl Zimmerman, CEO of Steadfast Networks. "The same high quality and exceptional service Steadfast Networks stands for in our managed servers, colocation hosting services, and web hosting services is the standard we aspire to for maintaining a healthy environment."

While purchasing carbon offsets does not lower the actual power consumption of a data center, it certainly encourages alternative energy production elsewhere and forces a web host, such as Steadfast, to be more efficient with its power consumption because it costs more than other companies.

In addition to purchasing carbon offsets, Steadfast Networks says it encourages employees to commute by foot, bike, or public transportation, and in some cases, work from home.

The company also orders more than 90 percent of its equipment with no packing materials from local vendors such as Amadi Systems, cutting down on the emissions caused while transporting and excess trash.

Steadfast also receycles alll paper and cardboard products, equipment, hardware, and servers in its buildings.

Steadfast Network provides a range of services, including shared web hosting, VPS hosting, backup, colocation and dedicated server.

July 2010 - What's Next? Forecasting Hosting's Future
Technically, there's nothing new about us posing the question, "what are the next steps hosting providers must take to capitalize on the opportunities available in the business?" From the 10,000-foot view, that's the basic premise that underlies just about everything the WHIR publishes or produces. In this particular case, however, we're looking at it through an extremely significant contextual lens. That is, for much of the last two years, hosting providers have been operating in a business climate defined by an economy in crisis.

March 2010 - Web Hosting in Europe
Europe cuts an interesting figure in our coverage of the web hosting industry. From a purely news standpoint, it is very possible to treat Europe in more or less the same way that we treat North America - that is, report the facts, ask the right questions, try to anticipate the issues raised. From an analytical standpoint, however, we present a distinctly North American point of view - this being the product of circumstances (our location), rather than a bias.

January 2010 - Hottest Hosts Directory
In 2008, in our inaugural Hottest Hosts guide, I wrote that we were exploring a new format with the first in-print directory of web hosting services. And last year, I discussed the project in the context of an ongoing project, and a growing tradition here at the Web Host Industry Review. The objective, however, is not to repeat ourselves, but to help the directory evolve into a more valuable resource - something that's going to help you with your purchasing decisions, and something you're going to hold on to for the duration of the year.
