(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider ServInt (www.servint.net) has met its climate-positive web hosting goals for 2008, having offset by at least 110 percent the total carbon footprint of its entire line of virtual private servers, including its SuperVPS service, by funding reforestation campaigns.
According to ServInt's Wednesday announcement, the company launched its Green Initiative in June 2008, encompassing multiple green methodologies to help customers operate with minimal environmental impact. The company offset its carbon emissions by funding a large-scale reforestation campaign operated by American Forests (www.americanforests.org).
ServInt also made other aspects of its business more environmentally friendly by recycling all possible components and exceeding the environmental standards when disposing all non-recyclable hazardous components.
Aside from paying for projects intended to reverse climate change, ServInt has reduced its own impact by exclusively using of low-voltage Dell server hardware for two of its most popular hosting services, SuperVPS and UltimateVPS, and using sophisticated virtualization to increase efficiency while providing the same computing performance of a traditional dedicated server.
ServInt founder and chief executive officer Reed Caldwell said his company is committed to the precepts of "Lean Manufacturing" by running the least-wasteful organization possible.
"In 2008, we helped ourselves, our customers and the planet by utilizing efficient servers, recycling our components and investing in carbon-offset projects," Caldwell said in a statement. "This year, we will continue our commitment to these green measures and go even further by exploring new ways of decreasing waste and increasing efficiency."
In January, ServInt introduced a new line of dedicated servers that incorporate a virtualization layer, creating a high-performance application and web hosting solution built on Parallels' Virtuozzo platform.

This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
