Yahoo Opens 180K Sq. Ft. Data Center in Nebraska

  • By Justin Lee, February 18, 2010

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) announced this week it has opened its new data center in La Vista, Nebraska, according to a report by Data Center Knowledge.

The 180,000 square foot data center is located near Omaha. Once completed, the facility will hold about 100,000 servers, have about 50 employees and will become the company's largest data center.

In early 2008, Yahoo scouted some 17 states to find the ideal location until it finally decided on Nebraska for its state tax incentives, low energy costs and skilled workforce.

The $100 million deal included the La Vista data center and a customer care center in Omaha, which created 200 jobs in total.

The new data center will support the company's search engine, email service and other products. The facility is currently operating at about half capacity, says Scott Noteboom, who heads data center development for Yahoo.

Yahoo held an event Thursday to unveil the new data center, with Nebraska Dave Heineman and other state and local officials in attendance.

The company is also building a $150 million data center in the Lockport Industrial Park in Western New York, which will feature a "computing coop" design.

Earlier this week, Yahoo investor Carl Icahn sold off more than 63 million of his shares, while co-founder Jerry Yang put 3 million of his shares up for sale and co-founder David Filo plans to sell 2 million shares.
