February 2, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet research organization Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced on Friday the results of its Web Server Survey for February 2007.
Netcraft says it received responses from 108,810,358 Web sites, an increase of 1.93 million from last month.
According to the survey, Apache had a decline of 442K Web sites this month and saw its share of the Web server market slip by 1.47 percent to 58.7 percent. Netcraft says this is the first time Apache's market share has been below 60 percent since September 2002.
Microsoft-IIS on the other hand gained 935K Web sites, continuing its advance towards Apache’s leading position. In the February 2006 survey, Apache held a 68 percent market share, giving it a lead of 47.5 percent over Windows, but this month, Microsoft's share has increased to 31 percent, narrowing Apache's advantage to 27.7 percent, says Netcraft.

Not mentioned in the commentary that accompanies the survey is an interesting change: Lighttpd, an open-source Web server reknown for its speed and small memory footprint, shot up from 179,000 to 703,000 sites since January, and from 13th place to 6th place. Pretty impressive.

What is the market share for Lighttpd then?
The Netcraft site has figures for Zeus, which comes in at a market share of just 0.52%. That means your Lighttpd has a market share of less than .52%. That's insignificant, and might explain why it wasn't even mentioned in this report.

Smithy: Lighttpd is in 6th place with 0.65 percent share, Zeus is in 8th place with 0.48 percent share. Zeus once had a much larger share, which is presumably why it is still tracked on the front page of the survey.
