Web Host SingleHop Donates $10k to Haitian Relief

By Justin Lee, January 22, 2010

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Web hosting provider SingleHop (www.singlehop.com) announced on Friday it will donate $10,000 to aid and relief efforts in Haiti.

The island nation continues to struggle following a devasting 7.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred on January 12th.

The disaster resulted in as many as 200,000 deaths and left an estimated 1.5 million people homeless.

In the aftermath of the quake, Haitians are faced with a critical shortage of essential supplies and support personnel.

SingleHop's relief contribution includes a matching funds initiative, where the company will match any donations to its aid package made by SingleHop employees and customers.

"Our contributions will go towards providing food, water, shelter, and medical supplies to the earthquake victims who so desperately need them right now," says Dan Salcedo, SingleHop VP of communications. "We hope that by leading the Web hosting industry in Haitian relief contributions, and by encouraging and matching contributions from our own employees, we can do our part and also inspire other individuals and organizations to respond generously to this humanitarian emergency."

SingleHop has chosen to donate through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund initiative since the fund is structured on delivering 100 percent of the donations to the victims as administration costs are being undertaken by both President Bush and President Clinton's foundations.

Other companies in the hosting industry have also announced they are contributing to the relief and aid cause. Last week, domain registrar and hosting provider Go Daddy donated $500,000 to Hope for Haiti.

Additionally, a slew of hosts including Rackspace Hosting, Peer1 Hosting, GoGrid, The Planet, ServInt, Webair, HostGator.com, VPS.NET, Softlayer, site5, and SingleHop are participating in Hosting for Haiti, an online project that is raising funding and awareness for the American Red Cross' efforts in Haiti.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
