Keepit Storage Partners with Parallels

By David Hamilton, January 14, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Making its online backup solution more widely available, Scandinavian software developer Keepit.com (www.keepit.com) has signed a long term distribution agreement with virtualization and automation provider Parallels (www.parallels.com) to bring its backup-solution to more than 10 million small and medium-sized businesses through Parallels' Service Provider network.

According to the company's Tuesday announcement, the deal will make Keepit.com's "ultra-simple ultra-sleek" online backup application available to Parallels' partner network. Based on IBM's Tivoli Storage Management solution, the Keepit application promises to remove the hassle businesses have traditionally faced when implementing secure offsite backup.

"This contract is a landmark in our efforts to become one of the leading providers of online backup," Keepit.com chief executive officer Frederik Schouboe said in a statement. "The SMB segment represents an unprecedented opportunity for cloud-based services such as Keepit.com Online Backup. Parallels is the perfect match for Keepit.com with a strong market position and partnerships with important industry players around the globe."

Critical of every application added to its network, Parallels SaaS division vice president Soeren Von Varchmin said partners will be able to benefit from being able to offer the new backup solution.

"With Keepit.com on board we can provide our partners with an even broader offering, incorporating strong online backup services which are both simple and easy to use," Von Varchmin said in a statement. "This enables our partners to build their own offerings, potentially increasing their revenue streams. As a result, we anticipate a long-lasting and fruitful partnership over the next many years with Keepit.com; helping to grow and secure the business of our clients."

In June 2008, Netherlands-based Internet service provider ProServe (www.proserve.nl) announced it would be using Parallels' Virtuozzo Containers 4.0 as the platform for its online backup solution.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
