Sales and Promos Roundup

By David Hamilton, January 09, 2009

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The first full week of 2009 promised many new web hosting sales and promotions, and - not unlike New Year's resolutions - they have been both ambitious and will perhaps be short-lived.

One of the most interesting was Host Color's free domain offer to coincide with Elvis Presley's birthday. While fun and intriguing, Host Color and other hosts have also offered less gimmicky promotions including 34SP.com offering VPS plans starting at 10 cents per month and The Planet's server migration promotion that offers a free month of service and free migration for customers who switch.

34SP.com Offers Virtual Private Servers for a Dime

UK virtual private server provider 34SP.com (www.34sp.com) launched a new promotion for new VPS clients this week to ease the transition from shared hosting or a dedicated server to VPS hosting by offering the first month of any VPS hosting account for just 10 cents and free setup on all VPS accounts.

Host Color Gives Free .US Domain On King's B-Day

Web hosting provider Host Color (www.hostcolor.com) will celebrate the birthday of American Rock and Roll legend Elvis Presley on January 8 by offering a free .US domain and a 10 percent instant rebate on all web hosting plans. The unusual promotion stems from Host Color managing director Alexander Avramov's and other employees' love of Presley's classically American music. "To be honest we have to tell you that Host Color is a Rock & Roll addicted hosting company," he said in a statement.

Host Color Celebrates 2009 with Instant Web Hosting Rebate

While the rock-inspired promotion has ended, Host Color also announced this week that its instant web hosting rebate, which offers 25 percent off all shared, virtual and dedicated server hosting, has been extended until January 10. The discount includes its powerful Virtuozzo VPS Hosting services, which features a VPS package with 1,024 MB of RAM, 50 GB of disc space and 350 GB of monthly bandwidth for only $52.46 per month.

Host Color has upgraded its VPS plans to Virtuozzo Containers 4.0, the latest version, and has recently made Plesk 9.0 web hosting control panel available to all VPS hosting customers.

R1Soft Congratulates Winner of Its 42-inch Plasma TV

Data center software developer R1Soft (www.r1soft.com) has announced Colorado hosting firm Springs Hosting (www.springshosting.com) the winner of its year-end draw for a 42-inch plasma television. Springs Hosting provides premium website and email hosting, dedicated servers, colocation, and data center services using Cisco routing equipment.

According to Springs Hosting chief executive officer Don Brown, the plasma TV is in the conference room, where it is being for "playing hours and hours of Rock Band 2 on the Xbox," he said in a statement.

OpenSRS Discounts Several ccTLDs

OpenSRS (www.opensrs.com), the wholesale reseller services group of Tucows, has announced price reductions for domain customers worldwide, dropping the price of .CN (China) domains to $15/domain year, and both .CH (Switzerland) and .LI (Liechtenstein) domains to $20 per year each.

The Planet Launches New Year's Migration Promotion

Early this week, hosting provider The Planet (www.theplanet.com) began an aggressive campaign to attract dedicated server customers on the verge of switching hosting providers, offering customers who switch to The Planet a free month of service and free migration assistance from IT staff including one hour of consultation for each new server purchased.

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
