March 25, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) signed an expanded agreement with Novell on Wednesday that will see Novell's (novell.com) recently-acquired SuSE Linux operating system supported on both HP Compaq server and desktop systems. Under the agreement, Novell SuSE Linux will become the standard Linux distribution for HP's line of desktops and notebook computers. The agreement expands an existing deal certifying Novell SuSE Linux on HP Proliant and HP Integrity servers in North America. HP said it would extend this arrangement to other countries at a later date.

News Red Hat Offers Warranty on Linux Software

The warranty, part of Red Hat's Open Source Assurance Program, comes on the heels of a similar announcement made last week by SuSE Linux, recently acquired by Novell, who said it would offer legal protection to users of the Linux open source operating system.

News SCO Files Lawsuit Against Novell

According to the report, SCO is accusing Novell of slander and seeking a court order that would require Novell to assign to SCO all UNIX-related copyrights and to withdraw any statements that lay claim to ownership of UNIX. The suit also seeks unspecified punitive damages and injunctions that would transfer to SCO any UNIX-related copyrights obtained by Novell.

News Veritas Releases Server Provisioning Software

The company said the solution helps reduce the cost and total amount of resources required to deploy servers across networks running in heterogeneous environments. According to VERITAS, OpForce 3.2 supports SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, IBM AIX and Sun Solaris. VERITAS said the solution also supports provisioning of Intel 64-bit Itanium processor-based servers.

In conjunction with the announcement, Novell said that IBM (ibm.com) would make an investment of $50 million in the company once the acquisition is completed.
