RIAA Offline Again, MyDoom Suspected

May 17, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Web site for the Recording Industry Association for America (RIAA.com) is again suffering significant downtime, a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (www.netcraft.com) says. The site was down on Sunday, May 16 and again on Monday, May 17.

RIAA Online Intermittently, Using Linux

The site was apparently brought down by a denial of service (DoS) attack launched by computers infected by a variant (MyDoom.F) of the MyDoom virus. The variant, which emerged a few weeks after the virus first appeared, could pose a recurring problem because it is programmed to launch a DoS attack against RIAA between the 17th and 22nd days of each month.

MyDoom.F Drives RIAA Web Site Offline

The new variant of the MyDoom virus, called the fastest spreading and worst virus of all time, installs a DLL which opens a backdoor, allowing it to be attacked. According to Panda Software, when the system date of the infected machine is between the 17th and 22nd of any month and any year, the virus will launch a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against the RIAA and Microsoft Web sites, with 2 out of 3 attacks targeting Microsoft.

New MyDoom Variant Spreading

The latest variant of the virus, MyDoom.F, deletes Microsoft Word and Excel files on a victim machine’s hard drive and other images and videos. According to research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), the MyDoom.F variant is similar to its predecessors, opening a backdoor on the victim machine. It also possesses its own SMTP engine, spreads through email attachments and is programmed to launch denial of service attacks (DoS) against Web sites. The latest variant is programmed to launch attacks against Microsoft.com and riaa.com, the Web site for the Recording Industry Association of America.

Anti-Piracy Campaign Dealt Major Blow

The federal appeals panel overruled a lower court decision that granted the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) the right to see customer information from Internet service provider Verizon Communications Inc.
