SCO Resellers Want Unix Support

August 3, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report in Ziff Davis Channel Zone, SCO (sco.com) resellers are more concerned with what SCO is doing with its Unix products than its ongoing legal battles over its claim that Unix code found in the Linux kernel violates its intellectual copyrights.

SCO Group Ordered to Reveal Code

SCO filed its lawsuit against IBM early last year, claiming that code used in IBM’s AIX operating system violates its intellectual property rights in UNIX. IBM is also a major supporter of Linux, another target of SCO. SCO claims that code found in the Linux kernel similarly infringes its UNIX copyrights.

SCO Suing Autozone, DaimlerChrysler

“AutoZone violated SCO’s UNIX copyrights by running versions of the Linux operating system that contain code, structure, sequence and/or organization from SCO’s proprietary UNIX System V code in violation of SCO’s copyrights,” the company said in a release.

Proposed Law to Penalize Domain Fraud

The new law targets people who provide false domain name contact information, increasing prison sentences by up to seven years.

SCO Files Lawsuit Against Novell

According to the report, SCO is accusing Novell of slander and seeking a court order that would require Novell to assign to SCO all UNIX-related copyrights and to withdraw any statements that lay claim to ownership of UNIX. The suit also seeks unspecified punitive damages and injunctions that would transfer to SCO any UNIX-related copyrights obtained by Novell.

SCO Seeking UNIX Licenses in Europe

A SCO intellectual property license “permits the use of SCO’s intellectual property, in binary form only, as contained in Linux distributions,” the company said in a release. SCO said users who purchase the licenses are properly compensating the company for use of its licensed UNIX code that is found in Linux.

SCO Asks UNIX Licensees to Certify Compliance

The SCO Group said written certification must be returned within 30 days. In the event that certification is not received, SCO said in the letter that it reserved the right to “pursue all legal remedies available to it including, but not limited to, license termination rights.”
