December 29, 2009 — An attack directed at Neustar, the domain name system services provider for Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Expedia, and other large e-commerce companies, took several Internet shopping sites offline the night before Christmas Eve, taking out sites completely or rendering them sluggish for about an hour, and leaving some last-minute shoppers in a lurch.
December 11, 2009 — Neustar, the organization that operates the UltraDNS product, announced on Thursday that it has collaborated with recursive DNS provider OpenDNS on creating a system that will allow the updating of the domain name system in near real time, using Neustar’s databases to create what the announcement calls the DNS Real-time Directory.
