In order to shift over to green business practices, many hosting providers have begun to reduce their energy usage and create fewer emissions, or compensate for their energy production by purchasing carbon credits with renewable energy resource programs like solar energy or wind farms, all in the name of reducing greenhouse gases.
Considering the growing trend, there may be Web hosting providers or resellers who like the idea of going green but don't have the control over their infrastructure to do it themselves, or don't have the budget to revamp their facilities with solar panels and energy efficient servers or spend the corporate budget on purchasing carbon credits.
The alternative option is to resell green Web hosting plans from another provider.
Oregon-based Web hosting provider ThinkHost (thinkhost.com) purchases green energy certificates (99 percent wind and one percent solar) to offset its carbon emissions by funding renewable energy sources that produce clean energy for others on the grid to use.
ThinkHost says resellers can choose any standard account level at standard cost for their own hosting site including a monthly $10 reseller fee, custom DNS, FTP and mail for anonymity, an unbranded reseller control panel with access to all resold accounts and resellers can also enjoy a 15 percent discount on all standard hosting packages when purchased for resale purposes. Resellers can sign up for a standard hosting plan with ThinkHost starting at $5.95 per month and can sell reseller packages to their clients for $6.90 per month plus $4.50 for setup, or resell any of ThinkHost's other hosting packages.
Another provider offering reseller plans is California-based AISO.Net (aiso.net). Its data center is completely solar powered through the use of 120 ground mounted solar panels and its facility also uses solar tubes, which draws natural light from outside, to replace 300 watts worth of electric lamps for five hours a day, five days a week.
AISO.Net says after signing up for a NetPRO Reseller Solar Powered hosting plan, which starts at $19.95 per month, there are no set up fees, no equipment to manage and resellers can charge any price they want for any of AISO.net's services. In addition, resellers can brand the services under their own company name and each new domain name gets its own Web hosting account, so resellers and their clients don't need to worry about sharing disk or email space.
