MGE UPS Introduces Power Protection Solution for Network Services
August 24, 2001 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) - MGE UPS Systems (mgeups.com), a global leader in
high-availability power solutions, yesterday introduced its new Comet
EXtreme Uninterruptible Power Supply that is one of the industry's smallest
UPS systems to provide over an hour of scalable power protection in a
compact tower or rack configuration.
Ideal for networks, B2B, e-commerce and other critical applications, the
Comet EXtreme's modular design allows users to easily scale the UPS as their
requirements grow, saving space and resources. The introduction of the Comet
EXtreme is part of MGE's ''Bring on the Blackouts'' campaign to help
businesses ride through ongoing energy problems across the nation.
MGE says the new Comet EXtreme family provides unsurpassed power protection
for enterprise applications and other vital peripherals with on-line
double-conversion technology, providing instantaneous backup power and the
highest level of power quality essential for today's demanding B2B,
e-services and CRM applications. These new UPS systems also feature:
High performance and reliability with online double-conversion
technology for maximum uptime and battery performance
High availability with planned redundancy options and hot-swap
battery functions that allow maintenance without interrupting power to
protected applications
Battery extension modules to increase battery backup time up to 100
minutes
Ease-of-use with simple installation, intuitive display and maximum
compatibility
The new rack-mount and tower Comet EXtreme provides customers with increased
flexibility, power capacity and manageability for enterprise systems running
on a variety of platforms. The new series includes four power configurations
(4.5kVA, 6kVA, 9kVA and 12kVA) to meet a broad range of requirements from
entry-level enterprise servers to large server systems. The Comet EXtreme is
ideal for dynamic environments with expanding number of servers, hubs,
routers and other rack-mounted equipment.
For many servers and Internet devices, the standard 10 minutes of backup
time is not enough to ride through extended power disturbances. Users can
connect additional battery and charger modules to obtain over an hour of
battery backup time. Hot-swap functionality allows easy addition or
replacement of battery modules without interrupting the supply of power to
connected systems.
Users can service the inverter module and/or replace batteries without
interrupting the supply of power to the connected equipment. In addition,
users will be able to combine two Comet EXtreme UPS modules to obtain a
redundant power solution. The new systems also feature an advanced level of
battery management with a built-in battery charger that greatly reduces
battery recharge time, recovering 80 percent of backup time in just two
hours and 45 minutes.
Offering the maximum level of hardware protection in a high-availability
Internetworking environment also requires an enhanced level of
communication. To fulfill this need, the Comet EXtreme features RS232
communications for easy connection as well as a selection of optional cards
that enable a host of communications capabilities for interactive local and
remote power management. With the optional SNMP card, users can monitor,
manage and conduct automatic orderly system shutdowns of remote
UPS-protected devices via any SNMP monitor.
The new UPS units also include MGE's robust Solution-Pac power management
software for Windows 95/98/2000, NT, Novell NetWare, SCO Unix v.3.0, SCO
Openserver 5.0, and Linux. With an intuitive GUI, the software assures
automatic orderly shutdown of unattended servers during extended outages,
automatic reboot, remote monitoring as well as alarm condition notification
via email, fax and pager. MultiSlot also provides orderly shutdown of
multiple operating systems in a heterogeneous environment.
