November 11, 2002 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Managed IP and managed hosting service provider SAVVIS Communications (savvis.net) and ISP Net Boogie Tech LLC announced on Monday that they had successfully used the SAVVIS network to provide real-time election results via the Lowndes County, Georgia, Web site.
SAVVIS says Lowndes County is one of the first counties on the country to offer real-time election results via the Web, and election officials are considering expanding the practice across the state.
The county had previously streamed live results to designated locations in the county on election night, but the public access dimension provided by the Web was the new goal, if it could be done securely and efficiently, said Net Boogie.
"Given recent controversies surrounding the tabulation of national election results, there was a need to balance providing the public with timely information while doing it accurately and efficiently," says Net Boogie president Gabe Fisher. "Tabulation results hit the web site within minutes of the polls closing and all votes from all 34 county precincts were tallied by 9:00 p.m."
Via a secure communications module designed by Net Boogie, election results were streamed in real-time over the SAVVIS network, making it possible for anyone with a Web browser to view them.
"This deployment was an excellent example of what SAVVIS does best: running a secure, reliable network so that our customers can focus on running their own business," said Bob LeBlanc, vice president of Product Engineering Development for SAVVIS. "We look forward to working with Net Boogie and election officials across the U.S. in expanding this promising model of distributing vital public information securely and efficiently."
