The new facility houses 50 jobs, most of which are centered around engineering. The company said most of the facility's personnel came from Boston-area companies with extensive experience in enterprise-level operating systems and other software.
The facility will be used to develop high-performance computing products, enhanced enterprise capabilities for its line of Advanced Server products, 64-bit technologies and other projects, Red Hat said.
"The Boston area is unusually strong in software engineering skills for enterprise computing. Many of the engineers joining our new Boston facility played an important part in developing such technologies as multiprocessing, fault-tolerance, 64-bit computing and supercomputers," said Paul Cormier, Executive Vice President of Engineering at Red Hat. "Now that Red Hat Linux has become one of the most pervasive server operating systems, our expanded Massachusetts engineering group will lead the industry in continually enhancing open source computing with the most important enterprise capabilities."
