Internet Software Consortium Opens Research Center
October 21, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- The Internet Software Consortium (ISC.org) said on Monday it has opened the Operations, Analysis, and Research Center (OARC.ISC.org), a crisis coordination center to protect the Internet?s global domain name system (DNS). The service includes an incident response system that enables major network operators to coordinate responses to threats and attacks on the global DNS.
According to ISC, the service is available to Internet service providers, corporate network operating centers, cyber security groups, top level domain operators, and developers of DNS hardware and software.
The ISC OARC also offers programs that include services such as operational characterization, analysis of the global domain name system, testing of patches designed to protect against DNS attacks, and education to inform the public about the domain name system.
"ISC OARC is going to provide an important coordinating function for large DNS operators," said Suzanne Woolf, senior programme manager for the ISC OARC. "We've always closely coordinated on an informal basis, but as the DNS continues to play an increasingly-important role in an ever-larger Internet, we really need to put formal mechanisms in place to respond more quickly and effectively to incidents."
ISC is a non-profit corporation founded in 1994 to provide public services associated with the domain name system.
