January 15, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- ICANN (icann.org) has recommended that top level domains run redundant DNS servers to answer domain name queries.

The recommendations call for servers to be placed in different locations and on separate networks for the purpose of better security and redundancy.
According to ICANN, "In addition to using different hardware, the servers ideally should be on different networks and in different physical locations."
ICANN also said that "at least two" independent servers should be used to provide a high degree of reliability and availability.
