The outage came shortly before version 5.3 of FreeBSD's Unix-based operating system was to enter beta testing.
Representatives from FreeBSD.org, however, said the outage was the result of a hardware failure that had no reflection on version 5.3 or its release cycle. The FreeBSD.org site runs FreeBSD version 4.10.
The FreeBSD.org Web site is hosted with Yahoo (yahoo.com), which happens to be the largest user of FreeBSD among hosting companies, with 261,000 Web sites, according to Netcraft. FreeBSD has added over a million hostnames and half a million active sites since July 2003, Netcraft said.
