June 8, 2004 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet service and Web hosting provider British Telecom (bt.com) has successfully deployed technology that blocks its 2.7 million customers from viewing child pornography sites, according to reports released Monday.
Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.
The system is named Cleanfeed and is expected to be up and running next month. With the technology in place, BT users who attempt to view child pornography will receive "page not found" error messages in their Web browsers.
The technology is reportedly capable of blocking sites by filtering specific domain names or the numeric address associated with the Web server hosting the site. This numeric approach has raised concerns since it could potentially block legitimate Web sites that share the same Web hosting provider as the illegal site.
British Telecom has spent several months working on blocking illegal sites after chairman Christopher Bland backed the idea. Other services providers have complained that blocking sites was either impossible or too expensive to implement.
