October 8, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Apple (apple.com) released Panther Server today, a Unix-based server platform based on Mac OS X Server version 10.3.
Panther Server will ship on October 24 and features over 150 new features, the company said.
"With more than 150 new features, Panther Server is the biggest release of Mac OS X Server ever," said Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing at Apple. "Panther Server combines the most popular solutions from the open source world with breakthrough management tools to create the most powerful and easy-to-use server for Mac, Windows and UNIX users."
The new features include a new server administration tool that helps administrators set up and manage the open source software built in to Mac OS X.
Apple said it is the first major vendor to ship a server platform with Samba 3, the open source project that delivers file and print services to Windows clients. Other open standards-based network services supported in Panther Server and designed for mixed-client environments include Open Directory 2, a LDAP directory and Kerberos authentication server.
Panther Server works together with Apple's Xserve rack-mount server hardware and is designed to run on Power Mac G5, G4 and G3 computers with a minimum of 128MB RAM, 4GB of available disk space and built-in USB.
