Netcraft reported one case of a vigilante, not affiliated with any Web host or law enforcement organization, taking down a PayPal phishing site. The fraudulent site, which was designed to trick users into divulging sensitive personal and financial information, was replaced with a warning page that read "Warning ? This Was A Scam Site." The identity of the vigilante is not known.
Another phishing site, Netcraft reported, was defaced by The Lad Wrecking Crew, an individual or group that has been credited with several phishing site defacings.
According to Netcraft, vigilantes would have little difficulty disrupting phisihing scams since phishing sites typically are hosted on servers that have already been compromrised.
