September 17, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In further news from the VMworld conference (vmworld.com) taking place in Las Vegas this week, VMware (vmware.com) and Cisco (cisco.com) announced that they have collaborated to, rather appropriately, develop a switch designed for use in virtualized environments.
The virtual software switch is called the Cisco Nexus 1000V. According to a variety of reports - the most useful of which seems to be the post on eWeek.com, the virtual switch solution will be a part of VMware's Virtual Infrastructure Suite 4.0, which should be released in 2009.
According to the information page on the Cisco website (which also includes a five-minute "video data sheet" clip), "the Nexus 1000V switch is a pure software implementation of a Cisco Nexus switch. It resides on a server and integrates with the hypervisor to deliver VN-Link virtual machine-aware network services."
The switch is reportedly designed to help IT managers better manage and network individual virtual machines within a larger virtualized environment. The product will work along with several others to build out VMware's developing cloud computing infrastructure.
The VMware product portfolio has been notably built out this week with several other announcements from the VMworld conference, including the development of the VMware Virtual Datacenter OS.
VMware's co-development of the Nexus 1000V isn't the company's first interaction with Cisco. Indeed, the networking giant bought a $130 million stake in the virtualization software firm last year.
The virtual switch announcement is probably not the last partner or product announcement that will come out of VMworld, which continues today.
