September 7, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- An otherwise somewhat ordinary week took a tragic turn when hosting platform developer 3Tera reported that CEO and founder Vladimir Miloushev had passed away the previous Thursday as a result of a sudden brain aneurysm.

Miloushev, who was 45 years old, was a fixture at Web hosting events, where the grid-based data center technology in which 3Tera is a pioneering force had been a hot topic for some time. The company reported this week that the CEO position would be filled by chairman Barry X Lynn, while CTO Peter Nickolov would become president and COO. Eric Tessler was named VP of engineering. In an announcement issued by the company, Lynn said the strong staff assembled at 3Tera by Miloushev would continue to execute his vision.

Prior to the tragic report, much of the week's most significant news had dealt with the release of survey data, with the programming for several Web hosting events also issued.

On Monday, Netcraft announced that it had released the results of its August 2007 Web Server Survey. According to Netcraft, the survey saw in increase of 7.2 million responses since the previous month, the largest number of sites ever recorded by the survey. While Apache saw an increase in new hostnames and active sites, the open-source software declined further in market share, as Microsoft gained 3 million new hostnames.

Also on Monday, research company Research and Markets announced that it had updated its Web Hosting - Portfolio Analysis, offering a comprehensive evaluation of the UK market, analyzing companies by financial performance. The analysis is designed to provide managers with a tool for benchmarking a hosting company's results and a resource for studying the market. It highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each company.

Also this week, a survey of Network World readers showed many enterprises failing to apply some basic security policies in protecting their virtual servers. Of 707 respondents, 36 percent said they realized virtualization carried an increased security risk. However, just over half said they had deployed firewalls and segmented their critical networks into virtual LANs, and half have deployed virtual machine awareness in intrusion detection systems. According to reports, some organizations are facing security issues wherein users with access are adding virtual machines without the knowledge of network operators.

Along with the release of network information, this week also saw several updates on the programs for industry events.

On Tuesday, the World Association of Domain Name Developers announced the schedule for the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East 2007 domain industry conference, set to take place from October 9 to 13, in Hollywood, Florida. The primary focus of the event will be key verticals like travel, real estate, gaming and financial. The event will include presentations on Internet traffic, brand value, domain acquisition and other industry issues.

And on Wednesday, research firm Tier 1 Research announced its list of keynote speakers for the company's third annual Hosting Transformation Summit, scheduled to take place in Las Vegas from September 17 to 19. Tier 1 VP and research director Daniel Golding will deliver an address called "Hosting Transformation: 2008 and Beyond," while Microsoft's Michael van Dijken will deliver an industry leadership keynote.

Certainly, readers interested in attending conferences will want to watch for updates on the most significant upcoming events. However, the significance of most of this week's news is dulled considerably, of course, by the tragic news about 3Tera's Miloushev.
