August 23, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Approximately 1.6 million customers from job-search portal Monster.com (monster.com) were the victims of computer viruses aimed at stealing their names, addresses and bank account numbers this past weekend.
According to reports, researchers at security software provider Symantec tracked the situation last Thursday when they noticed a malicious code in Eastern Europe harvesting email addresses stolen from Monster.com. The hackers' Trojan virus, which used real employer log-ons and passwords to access the information, transferred the data from the job site to a server in Eastern Europe.
Users whose emails were stolen received phishing emails that claimed to be prospective employers offering a work-from-home job that asked for access to the user's bank account. The emails specifically referenced Bank of America accounts as well as Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com, another popular job-search site. The virus also included a code that monitored online access to banks, blocked access to files and left a ransom note.
A Monster.com representative says the company has been working to halt the collection of its customers' information as well as shut down phishing email sites as they are detected. Security experts urge current Monster.com customers to check their credit records and to contact potential employers directly to find out whether they have actually been offered a position at the company.
