August 12, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Unified, email management services provider Mimecast (mimecast.com) has added Data Leak Prevention to its email security, continuity and archiving solution.
According to Mimecast's announcement, this new feature makes Mimecast the first vendor to provide a comprehensive DLP solution through the software-as-a-service model.
The addition of SaaS DLP will ensure emails containing data such as credit card numbers, defined content or confidential attachments can be detected and have security policy applied, providing organizations greater control over what information leaves their premises to meet internal governance and legislative compliance requirements.
According to a survey by independent research firm E-media Institute (e-mediainstitute.com) that polled 125 IT managers, 94 percent of companies currently have no measures in place to stop confidential information from leaving their organisation by e-mail. Targeting this untapped market, Mimecast promises a solution that enables users to prevent confidential or sensitive information from escaping their organisation whether accidental or malicious.
Using Mimecast's centralized policy engine, organisations will have the capability to hold an e-mail, provide a notification, change the e-mail's disclaimer, remove portions of the e-mail, strip an attachment or force the content to be encrypted though defined policy rules.
"Organisations need to take an information-centric and holistic view of their security measures. DLP is one vital component of their overall security strategy in order the meet the increasingly stringent requirements of governance and legislative compliance," Mimecast product strategist and security expert James Blake said in a statement. "With our new DLP features, we're offering a solution which tightly integrates with other features in our service to manage the e-mail throughout its entire lifecycle from transmission to storage without the need to deploy and configure on-premises hardware."
Security issues involving sensitive information are becoming increasingly crucial as threats become more sophisticated and many organizations neglect to keep up with the criminals including the US government. A recent report from the Government Accountability Office (gao.gov) found 70 percent of laptops and mobile devices used by federal agencies are not encrypted or secure.
