Colo 5 Opens Hurricane-Proof Facility

August 6, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Colocation provider Colo 5 announced this week it will open a new disaster recovery center in Jacksonville, Florida in mid-September that will be able to endure a Category 5 hurricane.

The company has invested $2 million in upgrades, both external and internal, on the 122,000 square foot data center.

Housed in the former Barnett Bank Data Center in Spring Park Road, the facility features two underground diesel fuel tanks that have the ability to power the building and its contents for more than a week.

The data center also has 18-inch-thick walls, windscreens that can handle up to 225 mph winds, and metal rollup doors for all exits. The facility also has about 35,000 square feet raised floor, providing easy access to cabling.

According to company CEO and president, Doug Recker, the data center has three fiber carriers. In the event that its Comcast fiber is disconnected, the data can be rerouted to AT&T and Level 3 or vice versa.

So far, Colo 5 has signed seven tenants for the facility, but the company anticipates that number will increase to about 50 by the end of 2009. The company is well funded with more than $2 million in financial backing, said Recker.
