Equinix Links Up With LinkedIn

August 5, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Network-neutral data center and internet exchange services provider Equinix (equinix.com) has announced that professional networking community LinkedIn (linkedin.com) has expanded its operations at Equinix by adding a new business continuity deployment at one of its Chicago Internet Business Exchange centers.

According to the announcement Monday, the new deployment expands on current LinkedIn operations within two of Equinix's Silicon Valley IBX centers. According to Equinix, the Chicago center offers a high-performance physical infrastructure including redundant power supply in the event of utility power disruption. It also has environmental control features that can facilitate the most demanding IT systems including high power density equipment such as blade servers.

"LinkedIn, along with MySpace, Digg and other companies that rely upon the Internet as a principal element of their business model, have found that Equinix's neutral centers are the best locations where they can reach all of the world's major networks within a single location," Equinix chief business officer Margie Backaus said in a statement. "In addition, Equinix provides them with a top-tier data center infrastructure that offers a strong platform for business continuity operations."

The Chicago center, according to Equinix, houses a mass of network service providers in a centralized location, letting LinkedIn interconnect with these strategic partners, including carriers, internet service providers, DSL providers and cable operators that offer direct access to LinkedIn's end-users. This interconnection also offers LinkedIn the ability to fully implement redundancy operations by providing a range of choices for backup networks in the event of a service interruption.

LinkedIn, with 25 million members, is one of many Web 2.0 application hosted by Equinix. In June, Equinix announced that instant messaging platform Meebo (meebo.com) would be moving its operations to one of Equinix's IBX centers in Silicon Valley.
