July 31, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Search engine giant Google (google.com) has launched a new project hosting service for open source software, according to reports released Monday.

Employing the Subversion control system, the new service provides repository hosting and support for issue tracking. The early beta reportedly has limited functionality at the moment and plenty of rough edges, more in tune with the principles of the open source movement than with some of Google's more polished beta offerings.
The service's issue tracking feature includes a useful filtering list view widget, but lacks popular Ajax flourishes. The project's search feature isn't fully useful yet either but is expected to improve as project metadata expands. Reports also say the Web-based repository view is a bit on the basic side and doesn't provide a means of viewing earlier revisions, the source code display is very simple and syntax highlighting isn't yet supported.
Google's new source code hosting service is reportedly far from ready for production use, but once properly integrated with GMail, Google Groups, Google Talk and other relevant services, the new hosting offering could become an important force in the development world.
