CDN Cyber Crime Unit Launches

By Justin Lee, theWHIR.com

July 22, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Bell Canada (bell.ca), the Competition Bureau of Canada (competitionbureau.gc.ca/epic/site/cb-bc.nsf/en/home), Concordia University (concordia.ca), Rogers Communications (rogers.com) and Microsoft Canada (microsoft.com/canada) announced on Tuesday that they are working towards establishing the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance Canada, a new alliance devoted to fighting cyber crime.

The rise in technology has led to an increase in high tech crimes targeting businesses and consumers. Hosted at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, NCFTA Canada will partner with Canadian partners to create a task force that addresses major online security issues.

The original NCFTA (ncfta.net), first started as an expansion of the Pittsburgh High Tech Crimes Task Force, one of the first coalitions of federal, state, and local law high-tech forces established in the United States.

The organization is a primary partnership established among the FBI, the National White Collar Crime Center, Carnegie Mellon University and West Virginia University.

"There is a recognized need for industry, academia, and law enforcement to work together and share information about cyber incidents in a neutral venue to identify and mitigate threats," says Dr. Louise Dandurand, VP of research and graduate studies at Concordia University. "NCFTA Canada is the appropriate and relevant response to such a need and Concordia is proud to host such an important organization."

The new Canadian division of NCFTA will enable and develop partnerships among the public sector, law enforcement agencies, the private sector and academic organizations that will reduce the impact of cyber-crime affecting Canadians.

By combining resources, intelligence, expertise and research and development efforts, NCTFA Canada will help promote information security in Canada. The organization will investigate cyber-crime targets to gather intelligence, define prevention methods, and develop counter-measures.

The group will develop and publish information that will help protect organizations or individuals from cyber-crime, as well as perform well-focused collaborative research and development initiatives.

NCTFA Canada will also develop and share tools that aid in the investigation or prevention of cyber-crime, as well as form relationships with organizations having similar vision both nationally and internationally.
