IBM Launches Project Big Green 2.0

By Anastasia Tubanos, theWHIR.com

July 18, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (ibm.com) announced on Friday the launch of the second phase of Project Big Green 2.0 in India. As part of the upgraded initiative, IBM's Global Technology Services team says it will specifically be targeting large corporate customers in India and will be introducing new products and services, which focus on energy efficiency.

Level 1 PCI DSS Certified Service Provider! DataPipe delivers the best network & support; top tier data centers; New York metro, Silicon Valley, London, Hong Kong, Shanghai. DataPipe - Personal Touch, Global Reach.

This announcement comes over a year after IBM first launched Project Big Green in May 2007, a $1 billion initiative devoted to delivering technologies that help clients increase the level of energy efficiency in their data centers.

With Project Big Green, IBM introduced offerings like Scalable Modular Data Center in the Indian market last year. With version 2.0 of this project, IBM says it is looking to further build up on the success that it has created with SMDCs and help clients make their IT more "green."

Fueled by offshoring and domestic demand, a report published in June by BroadGroup Consulting revealed that the data center market in India is experiencing substantial growth and will reach more than $1.5 billion in value by 2010.

However, despite this growth, power supply remains a critical challenge for the country, along with infrastructure, the quality of power and land availability.

According to reports by Network Computing, to help clients address these challenges, IBM has introduced modular, energy-efficient data center designs for the Indian market to power businesses ranging from large enterprises to small organizations, including solutions like the Portable Modular Data Center, Enterprise Modular Data Center and High Density Zone.

It is believed that, so far, IBM has built and managed nearly 300,000 square feet of data center space in India and is confident it will be further increasing its market share with the launch of these new products through this evolving "green" initiative. Some of the clients in India already working with IBM include Fiat India, Bharat Bijlee, Atlas Copco, Apollo Sindhoori, APL, FINO and Religare.

Amid what is now quite a steady stream of "green" data center news, IBM reported last month that it has opened what it considers its greenest data center in North America, located specifically in Boulder, Colorado.

Earlier in the month, IBM partnered with RackForce Networks and gigaCENTER Services to help build Canada's largest "green" data center.
