June 17, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- After launching a content delivery network product last month, hosting provider SoftLayer (softlayer.com) said this week that it has added several new features to the CDN product.
The product, called CDNLayer, was launched by the company in May of this year. In the month since the product's launch, says the new announcement, more than 100 customers have signed up for the service.
SoftLayer says the feedback from these early adopter customers has contributed to the new features added this week, which include: bandwidth monitoring by CDN PoP, origin pull of content; and FTP across the SoftLayer private network.
"SoftLayer customers are very sophisticated users of technology and we feel that it is critical to prioritize and respond to their requests," says George Karidis, SoftLayer's chief strategy officer, in the press release. "This is simply the first set of enhancements to CDNLayer that we have planned and expect to see an even more aggressive take-up of the service in the coming months."
According to Softlayer, the new bandwidth monitoring enables customers to select the point of presence from which content is downloaded for performance monitoring. The origin pull feature enables customers to specify an "origin pull location," allowing content to be pulled from the web server at cache-controlled intervals, which saves customers from having to upload some content using the SoftLayer portal or API. And the FTP feature lets customers use FTP to populate their CDNLayer accounts, with the private network meaning customers can send files from their server without eating up their monthly bandwidth.
