ADC Building $100M Green Data Center

By Liam Eagle, theWHIR.com

June 17, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to a report appearing last week in the Sacramento Business Journal, data center startup Advanced Data Centers (adatacenters.com) is well into the construction of its first facility, intended to be particularly environmentally friendly.

The Sacramento facility is being built at McLellan Business Park, which, according to the ADC website is located on the McLellan Airforce Base, a facility that apparently affords the data center "on-site security, emergency services and full service airport."

The data center will occupy 237,000 square feet, and include 11 private data center suites of 10,000 square feet each.

ADC president Michael Cohen tells the Sacramento Business Journal that the goal of the project is to create the most efficient data center possible, both for the purpose of the company's bottom line and for its impact on the environment.

The facility is reportedly designed to use as much as 30 percent less power than comparable facilities, using a variety of design features and airflow shaping techniques to reduce cooling costs, which are among the biggest energy draining data center features.

According to the report, the initial phase of the facility was pre-certified with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard by the US Green Building Council last month.

Energy efficiency in the data center has become one of the most pressing concerns in the hosting business, particularly among those companies building and operating data centers and those that manufacture data center hardware.

Last week, IBM lent its support to a green data center project in Canada, along with RackForce Networks and gigaCENTER Services. The facility is intended to be Canada's largest green data center.

ADC is a recent concern, reportedly launched about a year and a half ago by a small group of telecommunications industry veterans. The Sacramento facility is the first major data center project by the company, which acquired nine acres at McLellan last year for this project, along with a nearby 80,000 square foot data center. ADC tells the Business Journal that it intends to buy a further nine acres to support the building of its third and fourth phases.

The ADC website has an information page on the McLellan facility, including a diagram of the project, a long list of features and specifications, and several still photos of the construction. It also includes a link to a downloadable PDF data sheet.
