June 9, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- After a week spent struggling to deal with unexpected events in the data center, The Planet said this week that it would be bringing another notable executive on to the team.

More of a break in the reports from last week's explosion, and the subsequent data center outage that affected more than 7,000 dedicated server customers, than a result or a continuation, The Planet said Monday that it had appointed Robert Walters to lead the company's newly formed storage and backup business unit.

Having most recently worked with Rackspace, Walters will report to Steve Kahan, vice president of marketing and product management at The Planet. He will be responsible, says the announcement, for "leading strategy and developing new product lines to extend the company's portfolio."

According to The Planet, Walters has a history of significant technology industry work. At Rackspace he was director of product management, responsible for the strategy and delivery of the company's managed service portfolio. Before Rackspace, he worked with Hewlett-Packard as a senior product manager, responsible for the life cycle of the company's application management offering.

"With the growth of online businesses, there are both e-commerce requirements and legal obligations for having strong backup and storage products," says Kahan, in the announcement. "Rob Walters brings significant experience to The Planet, along with important industry knowledge.  His experience with some of the most highly regarded companies in the technology and hosting arena is a tremendous benefit to our company."

The establishment of a backup and storage business unit may have been an internal move that didn't see any publicity or external coverage. It's not precisely clear when the "newly formed" unit was established. But the company has certainly had backup and storage products for long enough to safely assume they pre-date the unit.

The Planet has separate sections on its website devoted to both its backup and storage products.
