Infinera Expands SAVVIS' Cali Network

June 9, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Network systems provider Infinera (infinera.com) announced on Monday it has completed a high bandwidth, regional optical network in California for IT infrastructure services provider SAVVIS (savvis.net), which will expand on its Application Transport Network in California.

SAVVIS operates a global IT services platform and 29 data centers spanning North America, Europe and Asia, which includes its new 20,000 square feet Chicago facility it officially launched today.

The company's ATN, a Tier 1 Multiprotocol Label Switching network, enables SAVVIS to further virtualize and optimize the delivery of customer applications. SAVVIS enlisted the help of Infinera to expand its California network capacity to meet the growing customer demands for lower latency and increased bandwidth.

By upgrading its California network to Infinera's new ILS2 line system, which becomes available this summer, SAVVIS will be able to have greater scalability, extended optical reach and access to other advanced features. "In order to meet the demands of the market and our customers, we needed to enhance our network services in California with a highly scalable, technologically advanced optical transport network," says Dennis Brouwer, VP of network business line management for SAVVIS. "Infinera has enabled SAVVIS to quickly install new network capacity, and with Infinera's world class capabilities we are able to grow our data centers and our business in an environmentally responsible manner." Infinera's Digital Optical Networking system provides the flexibility and scalability that SAVVIS require in California to meet the high-volume demand for bandwidth from its customers. With its digital architecture based on large-scale photonic integrated circuits, Infinera networks are very quick to install, turn up and configure.

Installing the Infinera system in California took a few weeks to implement. The system, which features client-side modules that can be switched from one to another within minutes, enables SAVVIS to quickly reconfigure the network.

Meanwhile, the Infinera DTN system offers integrated bandwidth management that enhances SAVVIS's flexibility and cost savings when compared to traditional DWDM systems. Additionally, Infinera?s photonic integrated circuits offer space and power-saving efficiency benefits over the traditional systems which are based on discrete optical components.

Last month, China's Ministry of Industry and Information provided Infinera with a certification key to the company's expansion into the Chinese market.
