June 6, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Security solutions provider DigiCert (digicert.com) announced on Tuesday it has launched its WildCard Plus SSL certificates, expanding the usefulness and compatibility of DigiCert wildcard certificates.
A typical wildcard certificate for *.digicert.com will work with names like http://www.digicert.com/ and mail.digicert.com, but not digicert.com itself. This can be problem for administrators who want to protect both https://www.digicert.com/ and https://digicert.com/ with the same certificate. DigiCert WildCard Plus tackles this issue by including the base domain in every wildcard certificate as a subject alternative name, a little-used but well-supported capability of SSL certificates.
DigiCert WildCard Plus also addresses compatibility issues with particular mobile devices. Along with DigiCert's Unlimited Server License, which is included with all WildCard SSL Certificates, the new WildCard Plus feature will allow system administrators to name up to ten specific sub-domains to be listed in the certificate, fixing problems involving the star (*) syntax.
"Some of our customers have problems securely connecting to their company mail server, because their mobile devices do not support wildcard name matching," says Christopher Skarda, DigiCert's director of security services. "We found that many of these mobile devices do support Subject Alternative Names. By putting the wildcard and the mail server name into the same certificate, we found a way to enable devices to accept the specific host name.
DigiCert recently announced it is offering Extended Validation SSL certificates, a third-party verification created to combat fraud and promote customer confidence online.
