FBI Wants Internet Records Kept June 6, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- According to reports, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Thursday it wants US Internet providers to retain Web address records for up to two years to aid investigations into terrorism and pornography. The request came during a recent meeting between US attorney general Alberto Gonzales and FBI director Robert Mueller, with top executives from companies like Google, Microsoft and AOL. Internet service providers Verizon and Comcast were also present at the meeting. Justice Department representatives say the meeting was intended for the attorney general to gather preliminary information and to solicit input from ISP executives on issues associated with data retention. IP addresses formed a major part of the discussion as they can monitor what a person does online, what sites are visited, what terms are searched and what gets downloaded. ISPs usually change the address data within several days to several weeks. The Justice Department says Internet companies would retain the information and the government would only gain access to records through legal means, like subpoenas. The FBI says records would be kept for two years and data would be used for anti-terrorism purposes. Recommendations regarding the issue are expected to be submitted to Gonzales in the next several weeks.
