June 5, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- IBM (ibm.com) announced on Thursday that it is heading up a joint research initiative of 13 European partners to develop technologies that help automate the continually changing demand for IT resources in a cloud computing environment.

Dubbed RESERVOIR -- Resources and Services Virtualization without Barriers -- the project sets to provide cloud-computing-based technologies that will enable the limitless delivery of IT services based on specific demands to maintain competitive costs, says Dr. Yaron Wolfsthal, senior manager of System Technologies at the IBM Research Lab.

The 17 million Euro EU-funded initiative will analyze the deployment and management of IT services across different administrative domains, IT platforms and geographies, said Wolfsthal.

"You can think of cloud computing as the Internet operating system for business and RESERVOIR as pioneering technologies that will enable people to access the cloud of services in an efficient and cost effective way," said Wolfsthal. "With demand for IT resources hard to predict, service providers usually over-provision resources in order to support peak demands and ensure continuous service availability and quality, while other systems run at lower capacity."

RESERVOIR will research new capabilities for the use of commercial service settings that are not currently supported, by developing new virtualization and grid technologies. Whenever additional services or infrastructure are required, one of the many RESERVOIR-powered websites can quickly supply them through the cloud.

The IBM Haifa Research Lab will lead this computing project while the organization of academic and industry partners will help promote this effort.

Research partners include Elsag Datamat, CETIC, OGF.eeig standards organization, SAP Research, Sun Microsystems, Telefónica Investigación y Desarrollo, Thales, Umea University, University College of London, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, University of Lugano and University of Messina.

RESERVOIR will be based on open standards to develop a scalable, flexible and dependable framework for delivering services in a cloud computing model. The project will develop technologies to serve IBM, partners and customers in the development of modern data centers.

Teremark recently announced it is offering enterprise cloud computing with a new managed platform for mission-critical applications and infrastructure.
