HP Set to Reduce Facility CO2 by 75%

June 4, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- HP's (hp.com) research unit, HP Labs, announced on Tuesday a new "green" initiative that strives to create sustainable data centers that hope to reduce the carbon footprint by 75 percent.

With the rising energy crisis, data centers are striving to implement environmentally-friendly measures in an attempt to lower emissions as well as power bills. HP Labs says it will work to "drastically reduce the amount of electricity consumed in the data center."

HP also recently launched a blade that holds two independent servers, which it says will be able to reduce energy consumption by 60 percent. Entitled the HP ProLiant BL2×220c G5, this two server blade is the first of its kind.

The blade is part of HP's overall initiative to target companies that have cloud computing, Web 2.0 and high performance computing infrastructure.

HP Labs also has a few other projects in the works, including the launch of another sustainability research project that hopes to substitute copper electrical connections with lasers. The end result would be optical connections that are 20 times more efficient, said HP.

The company will also build tools that will "predict, measure and manage the environmental impact of product manufacturing, supply chains and business processes.

Last week, India-based managed hosting provider Netmagic Solutions partnered with HP to help meet the growing demand for mid-market data center and managed services in India.
