June 2, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Iceland-based game developer CCP (ccpgames.com), perhaps best known for developing and publishing the popular science fiction-based massively multiplayer online game "EVE Online" (eve-online.com) announced on Monday it has virtualized its London data center with Cisco (cisco.com) data center virtualization technology.

The company says EVE Online players will be able to get faster and more reliable web-based gaming and subscriber services through this new update. Specifically, CCP says it will be deploying Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches in its London facility, which hosts the Cisco Application Control Engine Module.

This network upgrade will help ensure that registration, background information, access to related music and video, purchases of merchandise from EVE-Online.com and other support services are more reliable and respond quickly even when demand is heavy, says the game developer.

"It is absolutely crucial that CCP has a reliable, highly secure and efficient network to ensure that all aspects of our business are running smoothly," says Jon-Carlos Mayes, information technology director at CCP. "Cisco is a leader in the industry, and working together to provide maximum uptime of all systems and network has been critical for the success of our business functions."

Cisco explains that its technology uses virtual partitioning to create server resource segmentation and isolation so that multiple website applications can be managed and shared across CCP's 18 servers in its London data center. Cisco says its data center virtualization solutions will also help CCP manage the growing number of "EVE Online" subscribers and make managing web server applications more efficient.

According to CCP, "EVE" has had more than 42,000 concurrent players in the same virtual world and can support up to 100,000 players in real time, which is considered quite noteworthy considering MMOGs usually only support around 1,000 concurrent plays in a single scenario, says CCP. "EVE Online" currently has over 220,000 subscribers in total.
