The Planets Lowenberg Wins Award

May 27, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Dedicated hosting giant The Planet (theplanet.com) said this week that its vice president of facilities had been given an award by an online data center publication.

Jeff Lowenberg was named "data center manager of the year" by SearchDataCenter.com, a data center site belonging to the TechTarget publishing business. The award, says The Planet, was based on Lowenberg's work to save the company more than $1 million in energy costs in 2008.

Also in the running for the award were runner-up Armin Heinlein of the Panalpina Group, and finalists Ben Stewart of Terremark and William Stewart of Sempra Energy.

In its announcement of the award, The Planet says Lowenberg conducted a six-month trial designed to reduce power consumption and improve operating efficiency. According to the company, server loads increased by 5 percent while power used for cooling decreased by 31 percent, contributing to an overall power reduction of 13.5 percent through a range of improvements it applied across all of its data centers.

Lowenberg discussed the improvements with theWHIR at length in the article "Building the Green Data Center," which also appeared in the May 2008 "green issue" of WHIR Magazine.

The SearchDataCenter.com article reporting the award also includes a video segment on the facility and a tour from Lowenberg.

"From our own research and through discussions with customers, they choose The Planet based on the quality of our world-class data centers and network, as well as our reputation for customer service," said The Planet's chairman and CEO Douglas J. Erwin, in the press release announcing the award. "With more than 50,000 servers across our data centers, energy is our fourth-largest expense. Jeff Lowenberg's work contributes significantly to customer satisfaction, as well as to our bottom line. Jeff's award is a resounding commentary on the quality of our data centers, which our customers will appreciate."

Last week, The Planet announced that it would be running another promotion on dedicated servers.
