It seems the software vendor is looking to join the ranks of fellow software giants, Microsoft and Google, that have also recently been expanding their data center footprints to address the issue of fast scalability with cloud level services for their respective on-demand online businesses.

On Thursday, Google announced it has launched a new $600 million data center in Lenoir, North Carolina while in April, Microsoft announced it is building a $500 million "container farm" data center in Chicago.

Oracle will open what it describes as a "global information technology center" by 2010 to support its growing software as a service business, which grossed $174 million in revenue in its fiscal quarter ended March 26. According to Information Weekly, Oracle On Demand is expected to gross around $700 million in annual revenue in June.

Oracle's president, Safra Catz, said in a company statement on Monday the facility will also help support its research and development and customer service operations.

The company says it plans to break ground on the 200,000 square foot facility this summer and it is initially investing $285 million into the project. The data center is also expected to bring around 100 jobs to the area with wages reportedly exceeding 200 percent of the Salt Lake County average wage.
