Startup Acquires Web Host eNom
May 3, 2006 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Domain registrar and Web hosting provider eNom (enom.com) announced on Monday that it had been acquired by Demand Media, a new company led by former MySpace chairman Richard Rosenblatt. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed
According to the announcement, Demand Media plans to expand eNom's offerings by developing proprietary content tools and working in domain-based advertising. ENom CEO and founder Paul Stahura will become president and chief operating officer at Demand Media.
Demand Media is reportedly backed by $120 million in investment funding and venture capital. The company is said to have acquired more than 150,000 domains. In addition to eNom, it also acquired eHow, a developer of niche content for Web sites.
Internet research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) reports that, in addition to being the third-largest domain registrar, eNom is the world's fifth-largest Web hosting provider, measured by active sites. According to Netcraft, eNom hosts almost 750,000 active sites, offering shared hosting plans for $7.80 per month.
"Media companies and advertising networks are now recognizing the central role a domain name plays in bringing users to Internet properties," says Stahura. "The added capital from Demand Media will accelerate our commitment to grow our business as an ICANN-accredited domain name registrar and provider of high-quality value added services."
He says the company will continue to offer the services it has been known for, reassuring customers and resellers that the acquisition will not mean changes to any existing relationships. The eNom brand will also remain intact.
