April 25, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- In one of several new-customer stories just interesting enough to make the regular news today, managed hosting provider iomart (iomart.com) announced on Friday that it will be providing an end-to-end hosting service for Censorit, a service that filters internet content for children.
Designed to work with WiFi enabled game devices and portable media players, the Censorit service provides a "safe surfing experience" for children using these devices to access the Internet.
Censorit acts as a gateway to Internet content, filtering sites listed on a global blacklist, while checking unblocked website content for profanity and other flagged words and phrases. Parents can use a web-based portal to monitor their child's Internet use and receive the child's requests to unblock content.
Dan Makin, founder of Censorit, says the nature of the service means that it has to be on all the time, with the alternative very likely to lead to unhappy customers. The circumstances of the Censorit product mean it relies on a hosting provider to deliver a service with a very high level of uptime.
The press release quotes iomart managing director Sarah Haran as saying the company's experience with delivering always-on services puts it in a good position to understand how critical a zero-downtime service can be to a service like Censorit.
It also quotes Makin, who says he was most attracted to the attentiveness iomart showed from the outset.
"I've always felt that iomart has taken a real interest in the business," he says, "and believe me - as someone who has significant experience in the data center industry, that's a rare thing indeed."
Last month, iomart reported that it had siged a contract worth £6.75m over five years to provide hosting support for a major British telco. The dollar-value of the Censorit deal was not disclosed.
