April 23, 2007 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Managed web hosting provider Rackspace Managed Hosting (rackspace.com) announced on Monday that it had signed agreements to lease a new data center in Slough, England, and to power it using environmentally friendly energy.
The facility includes more than 65,000 square feet of raised floor, and the capacity to support more than 40,000 servers.
Leased from the Slough Estates Group, says Rackspace, will help to reduce the company's dependency on fossil fuel. The facility will be powered by Slough Heat and Power, which uses clean wood chips and fiber fuel - renewable biomass energy sources - instead of burning coal.
Through the process, material is shredded and converted into small, odorless cubes, which are burned to create electricity, hot water and steam.
"As Rackspace expands globally, we will work to leverage as many resources as we can that help conserve power or utilize renewable energy sources," said John Engates, chief technology officer, Rackspace Managed Hosting.
Rackspace also announced that it has joined The Green Grid, a non-profit organization devoted to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing systems. Rackspace says it will work to further research and development related to reducing power consumption in data centers.
"For companies like Rackspace, the issue of energy efficiency isn't only theoretical, it's a problem they deal with on a daily basis," said John Tuccillo, a director of The Green Grid. "As a service provider, Rackspace has unique insight into both the hardware and software side of the issue and will provide valuable contributions on ways to improve energy consumption in data centers."
Last week, Rackspace announced that it had launched a new short-term, on-demand Web hosting service designed to support short-term campaign-based Web hosting projects.
