April 21, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Despite reports last week that it would be blocking transactions from going through on "unsafe" Web browsers, online payment service PayPal (paypal.com) clafiried in a written statement on Monday that this is not necessarily the case.

On Friday, PayPal released a white paper written by PayPal's cheif information security officer, Michael Barrett, that outlines a five-pronged action plan aimed at slowing down the phishing epidemic. Part of this plan is to block any transactions from going through on browsers that don't support EV SSL certificates.

Some of the browsers PayPal confirmed that it would be banning were old versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

Although PayPal didn't officially say that it would be banning transactions on Apple's Safari browser, many assumed that the online payment service provider included Safari on its list of unsafe browsers since it offered no anti-phishing protection and didn't support the use of SSL certificates.

However, according to reports on Wired, a company spokesperson from PayPal told Computer World in an email that it had "absolutely no intention of blocking current versions of any browsers, including Apple's Safari," from its website and that it would continue to allow transactions to go through on that particular browser, despite no reports from Apple that it will be supporting the use of EV SSL certificates in future updates.
