The Web Host Industry Week in Review

By Liam Eagle, theWHIR.com

April 18, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- This week's Web hosting news saw a variety of announcements, but there was a fairly obvious "most significant" as fast as the hosting industry was concerned, as on Monday Layered Technologies announced that it had acquired Fastservers.Net.

On Monday morning the company issued an announcement saying it had acquired Fastservers, though it didn't disclose how much it had paid for the managed hosting provider. Layered Tech says it is still in the process of deciding whether Fastservers will continue to operate as a subsidiary, or will be integrated into the brand. Both companies are currently growing, and Layered Tech expects that growth will continue in both cases.

In an interview with the Web Host Industry Review, Layered Tech CEO Jack Finlayson described a plan for integration between the two companies. Formerly of Savvis, Finlayson has had experience with some of the largest hosting integrations ever without major service interruptions, and he is confident the Fastservers acquisition won't see the kind of problems of recent notoriously unsuccessful integrations.

In a bit of integration without any acquisition, it was reported this week that Google and Salesforce.com had expanded an existing partnership by integrating Google Apps into Salesforce's CRM and office software. The product, called Salesforce for Google Apps, will provide users with a Web portal that enables them to use versions of Google Apps, Gmail, Google Talk and Calendar with links to Salesforce software.

While several companies announced various efforts at collaboration, others named new internal collaborators this week, announcing the appointment of several significant executives.

On Monday, telecommunications provider Telx announced that it had named Rose Klimovich its VP of product development. She will oversee efforts to develop new products and services, plan new technology and develop the company's business strategy and alliances. She was previously VP of business strategy at AT&T.

And on Tuesday, colocation provider TELEHOUSE America announced it had named Yasushi Kubota its new president and CEO, as well as CEO of KDDI America, TELEHOUSE America's parent company. He will be responsible for leading TELEHOUSE's domestic business plan, while optimizing global collaboration with TELEHOUSE sister companies in other countries. He replaces Toshiaki Miki, who was named VP of KDDI Europe.

While some companies expanded their executive teams, others expanded their physical facilities, announcing the building of new data centers.

Early this week, SAVVIS announced that it had opened a second data center in Irving, Texas. The new 37,000 square-foot facility will share a site with the company's original 100,000 square-foot Irving facility. Within 18 months, says SAVVIS, the new data center will be expanded by another 45,000 square feet.

Also this week, Next Generation Data announced that it is building a new facility in Newport, Wales that will be one of the largest data centers in Europe. The company is investing almost $400 million to convert a former semiconductor plant into a facility with more than 400,000 square feet of space grouped into 15 separate customer centers.

While none of this week's news really begs to be followed, it is fairly certain there will be developments in the Fastservers acquisition, as Layered Tech executes on the 60-day portion of its integration plan. And the development of Salesforce for Google Apps will certainly be interesting to watch.
