April 17, 2008 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Data center operator Next Generation Data recently announced that it is building a Newport, Wales facility which will be one of the largest data centers in Europe.

The facility will feature redundant power and communications links, and will help meet the growing demand in the UK for secure, environmentally friendly centers.

Next Generation Data is investing almost $400 million to convert and upgrade a former semiconductor plant in Newport. Dubbed NGD Europe 1, the facility has 400,000 square feet of space that can be grouped into 15 separate centers for individual customers.

"Five major telecommunications carriers are providing interconnections to the center, and an electricity sub station nearby will provide redundant power," says Simon Taylor, chairman of Next Generation Data. "This is the largest facility of its type in the UK and will have the latest in communications, security and other equipment. We are negotiating with some of the largest corporations in Europe to be anchor tenants. They will put in their own equipment and manage their own services, if they wish."

International Business Wales (ibwales.com.), the economic development and trade promotional division of the Welsh government, will help promote the facility to American companies seeking to move to either the UK or Europe in general, or are already based there.

The data center is said to be ideal for financial and other businesses that are looking to move some operations out of the saturated London or as a secure backup for operations elsewhere in the UK or Europe.

The facility's first tenants should be able to move in later this year, says Taylor.
